Be sure other fuel burning equipment is properly vented to the outside.
• Insulate your home properly. If necessary, insulate walls and attics to conserve energy.
• Caulk doors and windows to keep cold air out.
• Install storm windows, or cover windows with plastic from the inside to provide an extra layer of insulation.
• Protect pipes from freezing:
o Wrap pipes in insulation or layers of old newspapers. Cover the newspapers with plastic to keep out moisture.
o Turn both hot and cold faucets to continuously drip a little.
o Keep a wrench near the valves and know how to shut off your water valves if a pipe bursts.
o For more information: "Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes" from the American Red Cross
• Inspect and flush your water heater.
• Clean gutters. Leaves and other debris will hamper drainage.
• Cut away tree branches that can fall on the house during an ice storm or from heavy snow. Â Notify the utility company of branches that overhang power lines; do not attempt to trim by yourself.
• Replace batteries for smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors. If you did not do this when you set the clocks back, do it now.
• Have a back-up power source in place if you are dependent upon electricity for medical or mobility needs.
• Know where your snow shovel is located and have a supply of sand and sand or a substitute.
• Prepare a warm, safe place for your animals in severe winter weather. Make sure any outbuilding that houses or shelters animals can withstand wind, heavy snow and ice.
o Bring pets indoors. Horses and livestock should have a shelter protected from wind, snow, ice and rain. Grazing animals need access to a protected supply of food and non-frozen water.
o Make sure your animals have access to high ground in case you do not have time to relocate them during a flood.
• Be aware of the potential for flooding when snow and ice melt.
• Consider purchasing flood insurance. Homeowners' policies do not cover damage from floods. Ask your insurance agent about the National Flood Insurance Program if you are at risk.

If Power Goes Out

Follow these tips:
• Dress in warm, light layers and wear a cap for warmth.
• Close off unused rooms.
• Eat well-balanced meals for energy.
• Use only safe sources of alternate heat such as a fireplace, a small well-vented wood or coal stove, or portable space heaters. Always follow manufacturers' instructions and never substitute one type of fuel for another.

Clearing Your Roof

• Clearing your roof is a dangerous task. Always think about safety first. If possible, do not attempt to clear the roof alone.
• When possible use long-handled rakes or poles.
• If you must use a ladder, make sure the base is securely anchored. Ask someone to hold the ladder while you climb.
• Know where the snow is going to fall before clearing the area.
• Make sure you do not touch electrical wires.
• If the job is too big for you, HIRE HELP.

https://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/7409/Ventnor Spring Block Party Accepting Vendor Applicationshttps://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/7958/
Save the date for the Ventnor Spring Block Party on Saturday, May 9, 2020! The CodeRED system provides the Department of Public Safety officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire City of Ventnor. Ventnor City Police Department, Office of Emergency Management Deputy Coordinator Donna Peterson cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them. "If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called." One of the reasons that the CodeRED system was selected is that it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system's database, which is an extremely important feature. “No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Deputy Coordinator Peterson said urging all individuals and businesses to log onto the follow link: https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/647738E6DBF8 or email the form to oem@police.ventnorcity.org.

Those without Internet access may call the Ventnor City Police Department, Deputy Coordinator Donna Peterson at (609) 823-7919, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM to supply their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number. Additional phone numbers (cell (provider needed) or landline) and email contact information can be added as well. All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, or who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number. With cell numbers, you carrier (ex. Verizon, AT&T, etc.) will need to be provided.

Deputy Coordinator Peterson explained, "CodeRED allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages." Deputy Coordinator Peterson stated, "CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information.

The data collected is confidential and will only be used for emergency notification purposes and will not be given or sold to anyone else.

Click here to open a fillable PDF version of the CodeRED form. We have taken steps to prepare the local energy grid to meet increased customer demand and help ensure continued affordable and reliable energy service for our customers. Our crews have performed maintenance and inspections to prepare the grid for severe weather and help keep homes cool and bright and businesses operational all summer long.

As part of our preparedness for the summer, we conduct emergency response drills and complete testing of computer and emergency systems as part of our summer preparedness program. Employees from across the company review emergency processes and procedures to help ensure a safe and efficient response to storms or emergencies. As part of the Exelon family of companies, we share best practices with our sister companies (BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and Pepco) and participate in emergency response training exercises to ensure we can provide seamless support and resources during a storm or emergency restoration effort. This practice of collaborating and sharing resources demonstrates the benefits of being part of the Exelon family of companies.

Every day, we are committed to providing safe, reliable and clean energy service, while helping to maintain affordability for our customers and communities. Our customers depend on reliable energy service to power their lives. We are investing every day in our systems to meet the growing energy needs of our customers and to provide a world-class customer experience. Because of this commitment customers experienced the most reliable service ever in 2022. And, over the last 10 years, investments in the local energy grid have resulted in a 56 percent reduction in the frequency of power outages for our customers. Over the past year, Atlantic City Electric performed work on several projects to further improve service reliability.

We are continuing to install new smart meters across our entire service area as part of our Smart Energy Network program. Most of our customers are welcoming the installation of these new meters that will provide many benefits, including helping them save energy and money, but also will further improve reliability through faster and more efficient power restoration than ever before following major storms. The new meters, along with the broader Smart Energy Network, will help us better identify the location and cause of outages when they occur and will help us better prioritize how we dispatch crews and plan restoration work – all helping to restore service even faster.

As you can see, we take the responsibility of providing our customers with safe, reliable and affordable energy service very seriously. This includes being prepared for whatever Mother Nature might bring us at any time of the year. We encourage others, including our customers, to be prepared as well. Please help us bring this important information into your community by sharing these steps that can be taken to prepare for summer storms.

Assemble an emergency storm kit.

Prepare a plan for what to do during a power outage or summer storm.

Confirm Atlantic City Electric has your current phone number in the “My Alerts and Notifications” section of the website: atlanticcityelectric.com/MyAccount.

Visit atlanticcityelectric.com/Mobileapp to download the mobile app, which has many resources to keep you informed during a storm.

More tips, resources and safety information are available at atlanticcityelectric.com/Storm.

https://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/17271/Ventnor Named a StormReady Communityhttps://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/17614/

The City of Ventnor has received StormReady designation from the National Weather Service, which ensures communities are prepared to save lives during severe weather events through advanced planning, education, and awareness.

To be StormReady, a community must:

Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center

Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public

Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally

Promote the importance of public readiness through community outreach

Develop a hazardous weather plan, which includes training and holding emergency exercises.

Click here to learn more about the program.

https://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/17614/Ventnor Pier Closing at 4 PM on September 22https://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/18020/

The Ventnor Fishing Pier will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 22, because of the approaching coastal storm. Anyone with a functional or access needs (or caregivers on their behalf) is encouraged to register at www.registerready.nj.gov or call New Jersey’s toll free 2-1-1 service. 2-1-1 will register you, offer free translation, and provide TTY services for the hearing impaired.

Emergency management officials view special needs registries from varying perspectives, ranging from concerns about the need for consumer expectations management to an increased sense of confidence about being able to track individuals in their communities who require specific assistance during adverse conditions. Registries can also become a focal point for building a dialogue about emergency preparedness with individuals who have access and functional needs or establishing a rapport with stakeholder groups who work with at-risk populations.

Registries are a great tool to help emergency management officials enhance services to community members, but they are not the only tool. Planning, emphasis on personal preparedness, and the engagement of stakeholder groups who work with functional needs populations are also essential tasks aimed at building a program which serves vulnerable populations.

https://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/18837/OEM Verifying Register Ready Informationhttps://www.ventnorcity.org/news/post/21261/

Please be aware that the City of Ventnor’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will be calling residents subscribed to the Register Ready registry to ensure information in our database is correct.
